    Output HDV to Canon HV20?

    by artengine » Mon Aug 17, 2009 6:14 am

It is too much processing power for my Mac Pro to capture 720p to the Hard Drive while mixing and if I use the Logical Record I lose some of the audio sensitive elements I have been using.

Am wondering if it is possible to send the Modul8 output out via Firewire to capture in HDV on a Canon HV20. Is something like a BlackMagic Card my only option here.

    Thanks in advance,
    Ryan

I have the HV30 which has the ability to capture analog video. So I can record video straight from my V4 mixer and audio from the main or the DJ mixer. Not many small consumer cams has that feature. Actually, that's the only model I found. Semi professional cameras has the feature but they are both big and often more than twice the price.

That said, it wasn't very helpful for you. I'd suggest you read Illan's post on the Modul8 Users blog. It deals with two ways of capturing. Either with software as in Udart's method or Vade's high quality HD method with the affordable Matrox capture box.

I figured the camera would have the ability to take in an HDV signal because it would be this that would allow you to dump back to tape from iMovie or FCP (This could be an inaccurate assumption). The challenge would be sending the signal over Firewire from Modul8.

I am digging into Udart's blog post today, but will keep an eye here if someone has any new suggestions.

    Cheers,

The biggest problem with my (Udart's) method is that it does not send sound to the camera. I will be looking out for a solution to this - I would also like to use my Canon HV30 as a recorder for my gigs.

The HV30 has some nice functions. But it's pretty plactic and poor quality. My screen just broke after just a month of using it. The camera still works but it's pretty hard to go back to the old school viewfinder. And you can't access the buttons on the screen and look in the viewfinder at the same time.

Anyhow, a little tip for sound input to a DV cam: I've bought a headphone amplifier with four outputs. With this device I can distribute sound from the main mixer or the DJ mixer to my VJ mates as well as ajust each output channel individually. Also good for ajusting the sound that goes in to a DV camera.
Try to get stereo sound from the mixer. Otherwise you have to deal with duplicating and flipping your only channel which is unnecessary work.

This is the headphone amplifier: http://www.thomann.de/gb/millenium_ha4.htm
