    moving project to other disk or computer = doesnt load media

    by pernordin » Thu Aug 26, 2010 2:14 pm

    I have searched, but not found any thread about this, which surprises me. Maybe there is one, but I cant find it.

    When I move a project to another disk, all my work is lost as it seems the projects path to the media is absolute rather than relative.
    The projects open, but the media doesnt load and I cant find a "search for media" option (as Logic and FCP has by automatic when it cant find a media).

    I create a folder for a job, and have subfolders for the "projects" and various media eg:
    (Folder)
    Flower Kings
    (subfolders)
    * Projects (where all the Module8 projects are)
    * Abstracts (with subsub folders)
    ** Fractals (media)
    ** Kaleidos (media)
    ** Blobs (media)
    * Pyro (with subsub folders)
    ** fireworks (media)
    ** blasts (media)
    ** fire (media)
    * People (media)
    * Pics (with subsub folders)
    ** Flowers (media)
    ** Birds (media)
    ** People (media)
    * Nature (with subsub folders)
    ** clouds (media)
    ** trees (media)
    **
    and so on

    I sit and build the show, preparing the scenes / projects. But if I do this on my desktop computer, then move the whole thing (top folder "FlowerKings" with all the included subfolders containing all the media) to an external drive to use my lap-top for the tour, then lo and behold, the media doesnt load, in spite of that the folder structure is unchanged and all the files and media are in the same relative place.
    This creates lots of problems. Relative paths are the only logical thing to use. Failing that, a "search for missing media" option is needed.
    Will this be changed?

    If all your media are in the same folder as your project file which should be at root level, even if you have media in sub and sub-sub folders migration shouldn't be an issue.

    At some point in life, when I have too much time on my hands (if it will ever happen) I will code a module that could exchange an old path for a new one in a project file. It should be doable. I should check first so this isn't something that the Garagecube team is working on.

    On solution is to open your project file (back it up first) in a text editor and do a search and replace for the file path. You should use a editor that doesn't change the file format. Like Text Mate or BB Edit or something.

    But otherwise keep the hierarchy Mowgli described and you should be fine.

    Thank you mowgli_uk for the info. Had I known this long ago, it would have saved me many hours of work and much anguish. :)

    The Midi Thief. Nice idea, but Id leave it to the Garagecube team to just fix the paths to relative, and then add a "search missing files" if needed.

    Thanks both for quick response! :)
