    Feature request: interpolation between states

    by plasticpool » Wed Nov 08, 2006 12:34 am

    Right now I'm on tour doing video for a "rock show for kids". It's 70% playback of DVDs and stills and 30% actual visuals. I've been using M8 for everything that's not a DVD and for the most part have been quite happy with it. However, there are some things M8 does that would be fine in a VJ setting but are not desirable in this kind of corporate gig for musicians doing narrative songs. The main problem I encounter is the absence of interpolation between states. For example, do the following:

    * make a new layer and put an image in it
    * set a speed and size for AUTO MOVE
    * turn on AUTO MOVE
    * notice that the image jumps to a new position
    * turn off AUTO MOVE
    * notice that the image jumps back to its original position

    I have tried to minimize these jumps by smoothly lowering the size but it still looks jerky (same with the LFOs IN, OUT and LINEAR). The same thing happens with AUTO SCALE and AUTO COLOR; AUTO ROTATE, however, does a nice return to origin.

    I would love to see the M8 team add smoothing and ramping functionality to solve this problem. No VJ app out there today is designed for more narrative or timeline-based performance. Adding this kind of functionality would be a major selling point for M8.

    thanks! :)

    p.s. also, please make the splash screen not be always-on-top. It gets in the way when I have to switch to another app while M8 is loading. :)

    Totally agree about all points mentioned. This jumping and lack of control annoys me so much that I quite often end up not using these 'basic' functions. I reckon it is the 'continuous looping' paradigm of much vj software getting in the way of user applications which use a more time & flow based approach.
    I do a lot of timeline based stuff and would pay good money for something like this module idea:

    as layed out by deckard97 sometime ago. I think the concept and apparent functionality is excellent. I even went and bought a book on python on the basis of this module idea. Not getting very far with that project though!
