    blackmagic intensity shuttle poor quality

    by geoffmatters » Sat Nov 10, 2018 4:22 am

    Camera -> HDMI 1080i 59.94 -> Black Magic Thunderbolt Intensity Shuttle -> M8 3.0

    Poor quality, it looks like the vertical resolution is half what it should be, fine diagonal lines have heavy horizontal pixelation.

    Camera -> HDMI 1080i 59.94 -> Black Magic Thunderbolt Intensity Shuttle -> Mad Mapper

    Same poor quality

    Camera -> HDMI 1080i 59.94 -> Black Magic Thunderbolt Intensity Shuttle -> Black Syphon -> M8 3.0

    Beautiful clean image

    Black syphon proves that it is possible to pull full quality frames out of the Intensity Shuttle but M8 and MM aren't getting that same quality.

    M8 2.9 exhibits the same problem

    Here is a sample showing the poor quality direct to m8, and the nice quality if I add black syphon to the signal chain

    Could you try using a progressive format like 1080p or 720p?

    Unfortunately, with this camera 1080i at 59.94 is the only format where the Shuttle will pick up the signal, so I have not been able to test with a progressive format. 1080p24 should work but doesn't. If I get a chance I will try testing input from a different device...

    Note that in my original description I mentioned "half vertical resolution" but from the screenshots it looks like there is a loss of horizontal resolution as well.

    Okay, I am changing my story back, zooming way in on the screenshots there is twice as much horizontal information as vertical. Certainly interlacing is a suspect...
