Using an USB VGA capture device

    by freespirit » Thu Mar 22, 2007 2:42 pm

Together with a rental company I'm researching the use of Modul8 for multi-screen presentations. One problem whe found is the need to be able to integrate powerpoint presentations into the output. Now we are thinking about using an VGA capture device wich connects to USB http://www.epiphan.com/products/product ... QgodCGjVJw

Will modul8 be able to recognize such a device.

Never tried so it is difficult to say. As long as it is recognized by Quicktime as a capture device, it should work.

Why not use a A/D converter? output powerpoint into the box (full screen off cause) with a composit or sVhs cable and then the box converts it to a DV stream into the firewire on the MOdul8 machine. Modul 8 will see the signal as it sees a DV Cam.

I have tested this and it works

Jeah but then I got PAL res, and the average presentation has at least a 1024x768 res. The idear for using a VGA capture device is that they allow a capture up to 1600x1200, wich allows for such a qaulity that poeple wouldn't notice that it is routed through Modul8

If it does work, I would be concerned with performance at that resolution. I've found it very hard to get decent performance from my DV/Cam, and it is running at a substantially lower res than 1600x1200.

I'm running it on a quite heavily maxed out mac pro. I use an advc for live camera input at PAL res (ADVC-100) and everything runs at full speed.

A problem that I would expect is a lack of quality from the capture device, but that's something I could only find out after buying one.

An other option I'm thinking about is putting a decklink card in the mac with HD-SDI and the Matrox MXO on a laptop for the presenter so it will output HD-SDI, problem is that that won't work on a windows machine wich most presenters use and is really expensive.
