big crash with lasting damage on system

    by krankjorem » Wed May 23, 2007 1:50 am

    hi there,
i'm new here, and a new user of modul8. i hope i'm posting this in the right section.
i've a uncovenient problem, let me expain this in a couple of steps, i hope you guys can help me:

    1.) i've got a powerbook G4 1.67GHz, 1.5Gb RAM, running OS X 10.4.9 and i've got latest Quicktime version running. curious for Modul8, so installed version 2.5.0
2.) testing Modul8 was okay; learning the basics, experimenting with different modules and material. and so on; running Modul8 with KVM-switch between my powerbook and a macbookpro. looks fine, but..
3.) big time crash on my powerbook after a while. [while editing text i guess] screen freezes, white code on black lines over the frozen screen. looks like a crashlog to me.. waiting patiently.. nothing.. [crappy image below]
4.) resetting powerbook. nothing unusual, starting Modul8 again, giving me only a black screen. looks like its the ouput on the wrong screen. Cmd T/I/L gives no effect. i get it back only once, via system prefs, but then it crashed again.
5.) while not using Modul8, OSX just pauzes/crashes regularly while typing in textfields of Mail, iChat, Adium, ect. for a few seconds or more [120]. cant do anything then. sometimes it doesnt come out this stage at all.
6.) uninstalled Modul8. PRAM reset. SMC reset.. but still having the spinning wheel regularly while typing or just when switching apps.

i tried to explain my situation as clear as i can get, i hope some of you will recognize this problem and know a solution. cause i just cant work anymore on my dearly beloved powerbook at this point. i'm thinking of just reinstalling OSX, but i'd rather not.. do you know a way to solve this problem?

    thank you in advance,
    TOM

don't know about your problem but it seems to be a problem with macosx or your hardware if this happens with the other things on your computer.

If you can do the update on your powerbook, do it maybe it helps, you should have done this before...

I suggest to post it to http://forums.macosxhints.com/, because it relly looks like a kernel panic. This is a sign of failing hardware quit often, but not always.
There are people who can help you to figure out what is happening.

BTW reinstalling OS X is not needed unless you want to do it for other reasons. And I hope you have customized your system for Modul8. It is not really must, but it may be important to be sure that your machine does not look for a missing printer or wireless network wich is not there. Ans so on... Widgets causing slowdowns, so ever searching Spotlight.
I actually have my Modul8 on different HD. I run it usually off firewire case, but for a show I put it in the Powerbook. I have successfully run nice and lean Tiger with M8 from CF 4gig Microdrive.
So in short since you are up to a cleanup consider your options.
There is a tread somewhere in vjforums for optimized Tiger.
There is a goog start for troubleshooting http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=13846

Update about my crashing PowerBook G4.
I reinstalled OSX over my previous version. at first it seemed like the problems were solved. but not long after that the beachball paid me several visits. sometimes the beachball even stopt spinning. i have to reset my PowerBook more often every time, and most of the time i get the finderlogo in a folder with a question-mark.
i can only think about one thing; hardware failure.. maybe it overheated or something like that.. im getting this thing to a authorized reseller to check it out.. cause it just makes me completely mad.. really mad..
thanx for all your comments, i will keep you posted
    greets, TOM

maybe a failure in the hard disk, the finder with ? at boot means the computer didn't find a disk with macos on it... If your harddisk is dead, you're lucky to be able to do a backup!!! Good luck with it

Check your memory (RAM) most of time it is the cause kernel panic.
Also some special drivers (like roland/ediroll or graphic cards...) may cause kernel panic.

You can also found a log report on your computer here :
    /Library/Logs/panic.log

For the exemple one of my kernel panic log due to a driver by roland/edirol for a usb to midi device (thank you roland, I never use this device again...) :
