    feature request: external MIDI maps

    by helium_micro » Mon Jun 11, 2007 5:25 pm

Hi all. I'm a new user and having a lot of fun getting into the app. One of the things that was really confusing me at first was the way you treat different MIDI mappings.

When I began I set prefs to Document for the mapping. I created a nice map in a md8 project but then I wanted to use the same map in another project. I soon realized there was no way to move my Document map to the Default map. (I thought that by selecting Save Map as Defaults once I had the proper map loaded, it would save the map - BUT, this only works if you have selected DEFAULT in the MIDI prefs.) I had to save my project as another project, remove the assets and layers and re-import assets, re-set up layers to use the same MIDI map.

My suggestion is that you store MIDI maps not in the document or in the default parameter, but as a separate file that is independent of the program and program files. This way, you could use a specific MIDI map at any time with any project.

Under Mapping, add Load MIDI map. That would be sweet! Now I have to set up my MIDI map manually after I have set up Default as the MIDI pref.

    Thanks,
    Helium

Quite a few people have commented on this problem. Saving a MIDI mapping to an project independent file is a feature slated for the next non-incremental release.

I think that this is an important issue. I just had Modul8 crash and with it my preferences were gone. Now I'm finding myself having to remap everything to my midi controllers, not fun at all!
I also agree that having multi midi-mapping possibilities would be an extremely valuable feature.
