    New macbook pro help

    by Bretty585 » Fri Mar 07, 2008 1:01 pm

    Hi,

I recently purchased the new macbook pro 15" maxed out in specs (2.6GHz, 4GB ram, 512 video, 7200rpm drive) and couldn't wait to load modul8. I had previously been using a PowerPC desktop (dual 2.16 w/ 3GB ram). Modul8 ran just fine on there but I am having major performance issues on the laptop. Whats the problem? I feel like modul8 should be running better on the MBP. Can someone help me out? Do I need to specify my memory usage better? The performance problems I am talking about are video stutter. Thank you.

I have not seen any stutter when using PhotoJPG codec for my clips. I also use Lumix compact camera to film, because it saves in quictime photoJPG format and these clips will play very smooth.
I have noticed some struggle with longer clips (longer means more than 200mb file) on all layers and h264 codec.
I got my MBP a month ago and was expecting huge performance upgrade. But in reality I get to play 10 layers without worry when running sensible amount of effects, but not anything amazing comparing to my Powerbook G4 867mhz.
So check your clips codec. It is maybe good idea to batch re-encode all of them. It helped when I had system freezing at the show.
And it took me about 2 weeks tweaking to get MBP to work smooth. It has so much crap installed out of the box. So it may become better ower some time period.
There is a option in pref to start releasing media when memory is used %. Mine is set to 80%. It was a suggestion somewhere on this forum.

I, for one, can say my MBP 2.33 running the old OSX 10.4.10 is super smooth and fast...

I have started re-encoding my clips to photoJPG and this has made a tremendous difference. Also, I will try out the 80% memory release. Thank you for your detailed response.
