Can we assign specific MIDI device in Modul8

    by vanakaru » Sun Sep 14, 2008 11:23 pm

I need to choose MIDI device for Modul8 from several devices connected to my computer. Some of them have same addresses, but will be mapped to different apps. How hard could it be to have a list of available devices instead of just "rescan..."

. really? i understanding having different configurations for each document - but when creating the midi setup, how do i ignore MIDI channel 1, but get MDI channel 2 or 3 that are coming from the same source?

. i use a livid instruments Ohm controller - the current firmware transmits every control down MIDI channel 1 by default and there is no way to turn it off. the is a problem b/c button 1 and slider 1 appear the same in Modul8. to remedy this situation, the Ohm comes w/an application that will transmit different MIDI data (value, range, and channel) via the IAC driver for each control. since the messages are sent at the same time, modul8 may get the channel 1 message last and set the value of a parameter to channel 1. after several tries it might come up with the channel 2 message, the one that i wanted.

. if i could block the channel 1 data, it would save me a lot of time building my setups!

Is it possible to write a modul that has these options to choose?
It is funny. I have been so happy with the ease of MIDI use in M8 and suddenly it feels SOOO stupid not to have option to choose a midi device or a channel. Many lesser apps have these options by default.
And could developers explain how M8 choose MIDI. Is it IAC Driver always or could it be always? If so we can use some MIDI routers to have some data go to IAC and some to other apps.

    Hi,

today Modul8 is subscribing to all available MIDI sources on your Mac.

We are working on an option to choose which MIDI sources to ignore. This will be saved in the application preferences.

    Hello anomad,

Next major release will let you enable/disable some devices but for filtering out some channels you will have to use a MIDI router.

Do you have example of application allowing you to choose which channel you accept/ignore ?

. the ability to disable devices would solve all of my problems! any idea when we'll see that next version? :)

. i don't know of any vj apps that allow that (i only use modul8 ) - but, i would think you could use a simple interface that mimic's Audio/Midi setup and set which devices to listen to and which channels you want to filter out on each of those devices.
