Using a external Hardrive during a live show

    by JulieS » Sat Feb 14, 2009 6:51 pm

I already post a topic, but this a different question so...

I using modul 8 to project video during a 3 hours theater show. I have all my modul 8 files and Quictimes sequences on a external Hardrive (of course I have a backup). I was wondering if it's more dangerous this way or having everithing on my computer and taking the risk to perform with a memory full computer (a mac book pro 2 GO)?

Thank you for your help! :D

I used to work as an FCP editor and all media was stored on external drives connected by FW800. Most of the media was broadcast quality DVCpro and it always worked without a glitch, so you shouldn't have any trouble..FW400 or USB2 should work okay too, but if you've got FW800, use it.
Another reason would be that external drives are mostly 7200 RPM where laptop drives are usually 5400 RPM.
Personally I would keep the modul8 files on the laptop, but I doubt it really makes a difference.

I use external drives all the time. I even boot from external when I run AE and PS, so my internal drive is clean of possible intruders during the show.
But performance wise it does not make much difference. Maybe if you use HD clips or alpha get 7200rpm drive into your MBP (there is very fast Seagate 54K v.4? too).
What has had difference somewhat is RAID eSATA Express Card setup.

Ok thanks for your answers! I'm using a FW800 so I will feel a little less stress during the show thanks to your comments;)

add another voice for FW ext working great in performance situations. I do dance performances with either FW 400 or 800 & M8 without problem.

    Enjoy!
