    logical record stutter

    by stuart » Thu Jul 21, 2005 1:09 am

My logical record output movies have stutters in them. I should be seeing smooth animation. Any way to fix this?

Can you elaborate a little bit ?
What exactly (auto animate, trace, fading, movie, etc..) ?
And what framerate, size and codec do you use for your rendering ?

    Thanks...

And also (of course) what is your configuration (os, cpu, memory, etc...) ?

    You bet:

I rendered a couple hours worth of material these past two weeks and here's what I noticed:

•The more pixel effects used per layer, the worse the stuttering becomes(seems to obviously indicate the limits of your machine).
•When adjusting a knob or slider(via MIDI, mouse or module), the playback would stutter a bit(noticed this most when using the Particle Fountain, but also when using Lumakey and Trace together–2 to 3 layers max).
•Setting the laptop res to 1024x768 (unstretched) seems improve performance a little bit.
•Not using a second monitor or output device helps ALOT.
•Reducing the display window to be as small as possible when performing the initial record helps ALOT.
•If stuttering got bad, a restart of M8 usually cured it (noticed this most when using 640x480 JPEGs in the Particle Fountain).

    Specs:

    G4 Powerbook
    1.25Ghz
    1.25GB RAM
40GB free space on OS drive
clips are generally 10-15 seconds, 320x240 Photo JPEG 75%
clips live on LaCie 200GB FW800 drive and are usually fully loaded into RAM

The clips I rendered out of M8 were 640x480 and usually 1 to 2 mins. Following the above advice made them come out rather nice.

    Cheers,
    Justin

Well, I did a test and stripped my output down to 1 single 640x480 PJPEG movie playing back without and effects/transforms/processing of any kind. In other words, simple single movie playback. I then rendered a logical record with High/High settings at 25fps (the rate of the original file) and when played back the movie stutters. I checked the rendered file frame by frame to confirm it was the render and not playback performance.

    I am on a iMac 1.8ghz G5 with 2 gigs of ram on 10.3.

Ok I have the same problem :(
Powerbook 1,5ghz 512 ram / clips on internal harddrive.

    The bug :
The rendered video clip (fonction --> render logical record) stutters. By checking the rendered video file frame by frame i realized that some frames are rendered twice. It happens every 3 to 15 frames. To give a better idea, if each letter is a different frame this is what the video could look like :
    A B C D D E F G H I J K L L M N O P Q R S T T U V W X X Y Z
Resulting in a stuttering output video.

So I did various test :
    - It doesn't seem to have anything to do with codecs (or codec settings)
    - Nor with video render size
    - I also tried rendering at higher frame rates (egg : 50/s) but I just get 3 identical frames in row when the bug happens instead of 2.

If I render a layer moving with automove the bug doesn't happen. But if this layer contains a clip, the clip will stutter even if the animation of the layer doesn't.
I hope this is clear, any openGL animation will stay smooth. Its only the playback of a video clip in the composition that stutters.
Just for extra info, the bug also happens with airport and bluethooth disapled (you never know ;) )
Good luck, really hope you could trace down this bug before the next update. This function in modul8 is really unique. But it this state its unusable.

We identified the problem and are working on it. We plan to fix it for the next minor release.
