2 questions from new member, re Macbook Pro and Multi-Proj.

    by john-doba » Sun Apr 04, 2010 11:43 am

Hello to all from Houston TX.

I'm getting ready to buy the software, have been using the demo so I have a decent initial sense of how it works. My computer is a top-of-the-line 2009 Macbook Pro, 2 NVIDIA cards, 4 gb RAM, 2.8 ghz chip, etc. My project involves playing live music accompaniment to a 45 minute movie/video I've assembled. I want multiple high quality copies of the video projected out, each customized to the room/venue. Modul8 appears to be the best thing going but I'm getting spooked from what I read here in the Forum, as to whether it can handle large files. Even if I carve the movie into separate blocs/layers, these would run 5-8 mins each and even at h264, will be sizable.

    1. Can the program handle these, or not, running on a top-of-the-line Macbook Pro?

    2. Will the mini-display port take the Matrox Triplehead DP edition and allow me to customize projections to the room?

    Hoping someone has some feedback---

    Thanks,
    John in Houston TX

. modul8 should be able to handle the files - experiment w/quality settings to get the best image quality/size ratio. i usually go 60% on my H.264 videos w/o any noticeable loss in quality. you'll also want to have the clips on a fast (7200rpm or better) drive, external is your best bet.

. matrox does support the mini-display port. if you're on a the 2009 macs, they don't have the ability to use RCA/Svideo out (just vga, dvi, hdmi ) - email their support for what you're looking to do. i've always found them very helpful.

anomad, Thanks so much. Perhaps you could comment on 2 other issues?

    1. It is possible these days to store files just on a thumb drive, I have an 8 gb at the ready. Do you have any experience/comment about this? Would they be faster than a disc drive?

    2. The "Contact" link on the GarageCube/Modul8 main page is broken. Is it possible to get direct support still, in the event of problems, etc? It makes me a little nervous.

    . john-doba,

. i would not recommend using a thumb drive - probably too slow if you pulling lots of videos in. if you make the files small enough, they'll be preloaded into RAM and you'll get the best performance. search the forums for how all that works and the best way to set the memory parameters.

. garage cube's support is top notch - they are very in tune w/users but in a completely different time zone... try emailing support at garagecube.com they usually respond in a day or so.

. i purchased modul8 quite a while ago and have to say it is one of the best investments i've made for myself and my creativity. the software is rock solid and i still find new things to do w/it every time i sit down and start digging into a module or setup.
