    Multiple cameras in modul8.

    by majornemo » Fri Sep 24, 2010 3:44 pm

I want to work with four cameras simultaneously in modul8.
I`m thinking in doing the following:
    1. Use one DV camera (Modul8 supports only one DV camera, right?), plus three Apple iSight FireWire Webcams.
    2. Connect them to a Unibrain FireRepeater-800 Pro FireWire 800 IEEE 1394b Repeater Hub 5 Port

    http://www.synchrotech.com/product-1394 ... 5-pro.html

    3. Connect this firewire hub to my Mackbook pro firewire plug.

Can Modul8 work well with this sistem? Is there a better wy to do this?

I apollogise for my bad english. Thank you.

Apple supports only one firewire DV video stream. It will capture firewire with DV compression. So to my understanding you will not be able to use 4 firewire devices with your MBP. I do not think the hub will trick it different.
There have been 4 cameras used with Modul8, but I am not sure you MBP will run this setup. Your frame rate will be possibly useless.
I have seen only MacPro run 4 live streams in with dedicated capture cards successfully.

vanakaru, you're actually wrong. It's not because the video stream goes through firewire that it is DV. Firewire iSights are not DV streams and can be easily used more thant once at a time. The only restriction is the actual speed of your firewire bus. you will have to chose the right settings of your isight to avoid frame drop. After 3 cams, it starts to stutters if all the cams are on the same bus… If you have a mac pro, you could use different firewire cards to help.

So this DV issue is only with DV cams as live input? Good to know that FW is usable for something.
And by the "right settings" you mean size or what? Could you give an example settings for 3 iSight cams. Does FW bus speeds differ from MBP generation to generation?
So does majomemo setup will work any meaningful way?
    Wow, so many questions!
