Which internal drive solution is best with 5400 and 7200 RPM

    by VjKg » Tue Mar 01, 2011 7:14 am

What is the best solution if I have 2 internal drives in a MacBook Pro and one is a 5400RPM and the other a 7200RPM?

Which drive should host the Media and which should be the Startup disc with Modul8?

I hope soon one will be SSD and the other 7200 or maybe 7200 SSD hybrid, but for now this is my option. I am using the firewire input for a signal from my V4 and want every ounce of speed I can get.

SSD is the best solution. 7200 is better than 5400. 7200 hybrid is apparently better but it hangs in live performances.I used seagate momentus xt hybrid and is verry fast but freeze frequently. Now i use OWC SSD and is amazingly fast.

I will eventually be purchasing an SSD for media drive and use my 7200 for startup. Right now I own several 5400 and one 7200. If both are going to be internal on a MBP which on should be media and which startup. I have a very important gig Friday and can not afford any more goodies as I just bought this brand new MBP 15". OK I lie, a local company has a very fast 64Gb SSD for $99 and I am considering that as it will be the fastest option under $100. But that is only if some client pay what they owe. So I am trying to figure out what is best case scenario with what I currently own. Besides I would rather save for the full 6Gbps SSD since my new laptop will support it and my opinion is Thunderbolt devices are going to be very expensive when they first launch.

Seagate Momentus XT Solid State Hybrid Drive

    by martyw79 » Tue Jun 21, 2011 6:37 am

    Hello,

Has anyone else had similar problems to camil with the Seagate Momentus XT Solid State Hybrid Drive freezing?

I'm looking to upgrade my MacBook Pro internal hard drive to something 7200rpm and through the Seagate Momentus XT Solid State Hybrid Drive would be a cheap alternative to a SSD (can't afford).

You need to do a firmware update to fix XT issues. The original run of these drives had issues with macs. I updated mine and now it's runs like it should.
Keep in mind the ssd part of the XT drives are optimized for caching OSstuff and may make no/little difference to media playback.

thanks lotech, in the end I opt for a 7200rpm drive and avoid the hybrids.

7200RPM is the best choice when compared with the 5400RPM. I also use 7200RPM in one of my system, the problem I experience is sometimes it hangs the whole system and very difficult to retrieve it back. Avoiding hybrids is a good option to fix the same.

so is it better to put the modul8 app on the 5400rpm and the media files on the 7200?

Applications should always be run off the Internal Driver and if possible the boot drive.
    Internal over External
Internal PCI-E SSD over Internal SATA SSD
    SSD over 7200
    7200 over 5400.
    Thunderbolt2 over Thunderbolt
    Thunderbolt over USB 3.0
    USB 3.0 over Firewire
    Firewire over USB 2.0

Whenever I'm working on a project, that entire project is moved to the SSD, that is probably more subconscious reliability over actual reliability.
Once you start that program it's in memory, and more then likely even with a 5400 rpm you won't bottle neck the drive.

For anyone looking for an SSD newegg right now has a 256GB for $160. These things are diving in price.
Toshiba Q Series Pro HDTS325XZSTA 2.5" 256GB Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820168089

I bought the OptiBay for my old MacBook Pro that replaces the CD drive with another Hard Drive slot.
    http://www.mcetech.com/optibay/
So a 256GB SSD in the stock slot, then a 1TB drive in the CD drive slot.

Also I wouldn't bother with a Hybrid or Fusion over looking at two separate drives.
You don't want your drive or OS to determine what goes on the SSD and what stays on the Platters.
Unless you are using those files every day, it's not going to assume to move those files to the SSD section, because it not something you use all the time, which is what the Hybrid and Fusions do.
They look at the file/sectors being used most often(day to day) and move those to the SSD part of the drive.
With two separate drives you can say, "I want these files on the SSD and be crazy fast."

    ....just my 2cents.

NateMac, very informative, thank you. That was a better answer than my question.

When you say you move your files to the ssd when you're working on a project, does this apply across the board with all your applications ie photoshop, ableton, m8 etc?

I do, but I also probably have a different workflow then most.
I work between a Home Mac Pro, a Work Mac Pro, and a MacBook Pro I travel with. All my hard drives are named the same a cross the computers and any project and assets I am working on lives in a DropBox.com folder on my computers. That way, where ever I am, I can access my projects and all the files associated with it.

Well the OP was over 2 years ago. I have a different laptop with 2 SDD's in it. I would still love the opinion of an experienced user for the original question which was never answered.

If you have 2 drives internal one for system and one for media and one is 5400 and the other 7200 what is the best configuration? 7200 for system and 5400 for media or the other way around.

From what I gather from Natemac you would want your apps running on the 7200 for the system and media on the 5400 if they are both ssd's.
