Mutliple MIDI-as-USB Issue

Hi there! I'm just starting to get my feet wet with Modul8, but I'm running into one giant hurdle that's keeping me from advancing properly.

I'm a semi-terrible electronic composer, which means I have a number of cheap MIDI-as-USB devices in my possession that I'm setting up within Modul8's MIDI configuration mode. The problem comes when I try hooking up more than one device at once - for whatever reason, all of my separate devices are being read as part of the same device (my keyboard's pitch bend is read as 1/1, while one of my turntable's dials are also 1/1, etc.). I am running the devices through a USB hub, but OS X's MIDI configuration is reading them independently, so I'm uncertain if that's the problem.

I've read through the forums and the documentation extensively, but I haven't found anything that seems to mention this issue. Can anyone offer some guidance as to what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks for your help!

. change the MIDI channel that each device is sending from.

. if that's not possible, look into MidiPipe to re-route the MIDI from one device to another channel

. modul8 does not differentiate (in the mode your using) between CC messages and MIDI note messages

Nomad, thanks for your help! I'll try MidiPipe shortly to see if that resolves the issue.

You mention that Modul8 doesn't differentiate in the mode that I'm in. Is there a mode that I could set it to that would address the problem (assuming that MidiPipe doesn't fix it)?

Thanks again!

. no, modul8 does not differentiate between the two. usually, it's not a big deal. you can set most MIDI controllers to send different channels - it all depends on the piece. i have an Ohm36 which sends CC changes and notes down the same channel, but has software where I can set the CC and note channel/values. so i made all the sliders/knobs transmit on channel 2 and all button on channel 3. most modern ones have software that you can use to change what value the key/dial/slider/button/etc. send.

. i'm pretty sure you can use MidiPipe to create a 'Message Converter' and select 'control change #' for in and 'note on' for out.

. MidiPipe - http://web.mac.com/nicowald/SubtleSoft/MidiPipe.html

. another useful tool is MidiMonitor - http://www.snoize.com/MIDIMonitor/ for seeing exactly which messages are being sent.
