Preview on an external monitor

I've searched around and can't quite grasp what the best practise is here.

I have an intel pre-unibody MacBook Pro 15".
The preview monitor is to small when I also need to see the Modul8 controls. So I'd like to split that off to a dedicated monitor for preview. Additional of course would also be my output.

I have a DVI to VGA adaptor, but I also have a DVI to Composite/SVideo adaptor.

------

Now I'm a bit confused, can I use the 2 outputs of the DVI to composite/SVideo as 2 separate outputs? (one for output one for preview)

A double/triple head2go doesn't solve the problem, as it would extend 1 display, not offer me 2. (and I need them to be independent, as ones desktop one is output)

Is a USB output an option for my preview monitor? (I hear this drains my ram)

I can't quite read the answers I'm looking for anywhere, but this must be super basic, as loads of you must use external screens to preview your footage.

Tips oh wise ones?

with the s-video-cinch adapter you can use both at the same time if I remember well

But the best would be to buy a VGA splitter so when you change your computer for a unibody someday, your config will still work!

I don't think you can move the preview panel off the main screen. I tried to do that when I was using AirDisplay on my iPad so that the iPad becomes an extra screen.

You can however make another output in Advanced output or get two signals (s-video + composite connectors) from the adaptor as sigmasix says if you want the exact same screen as your output. But then you can't preview the opposite of what is going out like in the M8 preview panel.

I so wish the preview panel was free to move around to other screens (or is this an easy fix?)

?

. no. they're the same output, locked at 640x480.

yeah, sorry I might have been confusing but yes, the image is the same in both s-video and cinch, so your preview monitor will only show you the same image as your output.
