    Stuttering in capture to disk

    by newdendrite » Sat Jun 04, 2011 7:03 am

I am trying to mix just two layers in M8 and capture the mix to disk, but captures always contain at least one or more stutters. Nothing I have done thus far seems to fix this. Does anyone have any advice on how to prevent this? If I can't solve this, it will cause really serious problems with a project I'm working on.

The clips are 720x486 and 640x480 photo-JPEG. They don't stutter under normal use -- I've used them many times in performances. I'm trying to output to 720x486 at 30fps. (It doesn't work with 640x480 either.) I've tried Apple Photo-JPEG, Apple Motion JPEG A & B, Apple MPEG4, and Apple Animation codecs. All cause similar stuttering. I've shut down all other app's and processes I can find, including WI-FI.

I'm reading clips from an OWC SSD and writing to a second one, both over Firewire. The machine is a 17 in 2010 MacBook Pro with a 2.66GHz i7 processor and 8GB RAM.

I get the same result with V2.6.2 of M8 and the previous version.

Does this mean that even fast configurations of the MacBook Pro cannot be used for capturing video output from M8? I'd really appreciate any help or ideas.

    Thanks,
    Michael

Capture to disk is not the best working option to do this. If you do not use time dependent (live) effects like sound controlled ones you can get better results with Recording the duration of your mix and Render Logical Record. You get no sound recorded but you can do it separate.
You can try also Syphon Recorder app with M8 new version where you output to Syphon and let it record. It seems to work really well. I just did a quick test, but people say it is great.
