input and output considerations for permanent installation

    by jsr » Mon Jun 06, 2011 11:25 am

    hej garagecube / modul8 forum,

i am building a permanent installation, and i am looking for the right software setup to run it. i am leaning towards modul8, but i have never used it, except playing a bit with the demo, so before purchasing a license, i would like to get some feedback on my setup ideas.

i basically want to control lights while playing back high resolution video on 3 screens (through a triple head to go) and sound on a surround setup. it is important that all media and lights are in sync.

    here is my setup considerations:

    input:

the installation should be triggered by an external switch, which will probably be arduino based. i figure i need to make modul8 listen for a MIDI signal or something like that, and have a small deamon running on the computer that listens for the arduino serial and translates this into MIDI. in theory i guess i could hack a cheap MIDI keyboard, and make the buttons presses be sent as MIDI commands directly from this. i guess this would work, but i do like the arduino setup better, as i can then give LED feedback to the control panel on whether the installation is running OK, problems, etc.

    output:

perfect solution would be if i could contain all media (video and sound) in one long quicktime, and insert DMX cues along the movie timeline? is this possible?

    workflow:

i am hoping to be able to edit the sound along the way in pro tools and send midi messages from pro tools that trigger video and DMX in modul8. but when my editing work is done, i would like to export a MIDI track with all the light/video cues, and have that play on a timeline in modul8. perhaps render the video, sound and MIDI cues to one large quicktime?

    can modul8 playback midi files?

    best regards,
    jacob sikker remin
