    Native resolution

    by madsmeskalin » Sat Jun 11, 2011 7:39 pm

I made a post about this in VJforums.com, but I post it here since this is more or less modul8 specific:

    Its actually kinda simple.
    1. How much of an image quality reduction do I get by sending an 800x600 image to a 1024x768 as opposed to a 800x600 native resolution beamer?
    2. How much does native resolution matter nowadays, using programs such as modul8.
    3. If my beamer is 1024x768, and my clips are 800x600, should I output 800x600 in displaypreferences or output 1024x768? What makes best results, and what puts the least strain on the computer.

The reason Im asking, is that Im about to buy some new beamers. But all of the good ones have a native resolution higher than the one my computer is comfortable playing.

    1. you get 28% more resolution sending native XGA to an XGA beamer vs SVGA to an XGA projector.
    2. it matters in a sense that resolutions are only getting higher not lower. My 320x240 AVIs were fine 10 years ago, but now that res just won't cut it. I currently try to make all my content in 720/1080 now so they should still be usable for another 10 years. You can (and I do) resize the full HD clips to smaller ones as you need for the (mostly down to the slightly weird 1365x768).
    3. Best output would be 1024x768 to the projector, Sleepytom made a point that it may give you less latency as the processor in the beamer might be doing less work dealing with its native res over scaling SVGA up. Also as Modul8 uses bilinear filtering for resizing it will soften the scaling up too and generally do a better job thanks to the power of the gfx card.
