    syncing several modul8-computers- howto ?

    by nbd » Sat Oct 22, 2005 1:11 pm

    Hi,
    we are trying to sync 3 macs running modul8 2.01 . How can this be done ?

    First thing we do is:

    a separate computer plays midi, all three macs are getting midi and play accordingly.
    so far, no problem.

    next thing we try:
    we use logic as midi-sequencer on one of the modul8-macs.
    problem: midi is feed through the system again and again, a midi feedback occurs.

    last, final:
    is there a way to steer modul8 via network(tcp/ip or udp), eg. osc or similar ? so all the midi-spookyness is not necessary ?

    that would be great !

    thank you !

    It's a simple module in python to send or received or both the controls values of your(s) modul8 interface through upd.

    Basically, this module allows you to create a network of machines with several Modul8 running as players and one Modul8 as the master controller. When you change something in the master, it sends the change to all its slaves. It allows you to do multiple projections using several Mac minis for example.

    How's the latency?

    why not use a splitter , if you are creating the same stuff all around!?

    I guess that with the right modules, you would be able to manipulate the recieved signal on the other machines.
    For example if Master sends "scale", then Slave1 will multiply "scale" by 4 and Slave2 will divide it by 8.

    You can choose what you want to sync. or not. Also you can work in very high res. comparing to a video splitter.

    In UDP the latency is pretty low, as long as you're in a local network of course.

    Pretty low...
    Is that low enough to have two clips trigger and play in 100% sync?

    Hi,

    I've worked once with two laptops running Modul8 synced in midi.
    The set-up was really simple :
    - a BCR2000 for trigerring ;
    - 1 powerbook running Modul8 with a 1i/1o UNO midi interface ;
    - 1 powerbook running Modul8 with a 2i/4o M-Audio midi interface ;
    It worked perfectly.

    I guess that the new UDP communication brings a all new scape of application, just like the Medialon system using 1 master to control other players. Correct me if i'm wrong.

    I have done it with Midi interfaces and Arkaos but after a few seconds the movies were out of sync even we were using the same computers with the same espects.

    I've been working with this recently over a wireless network and it works a treat.
