    Preferred Codec for Modul8?

    by balancelighting » Mon Jan 28, 2013 4:38 pm

I've got a library that spans several years and contains clips using different codecs and resolutions. I'm in the process of trying to re-index these clips to a standard 640x480 resolution as well as similar codecs.

    Question:

Is there a codec that works best for Modul8? I've ready that DV works well as well as Photo-JPEG. Anyone have any words of wisdom as to which works best?

    Thanks,
    Jason

Use Photo JPEG at 85% and PNG if you need Alpha Channel.

DXV+(alpha preserved) is good alternative to PNG.

I use PJPEG (Photo Jpeg with %85 quality) and very happy with it. It makes 0 lag with all my videos.
And I use a software called MPEG Streamclip for converting the codecs.

DXV is only optimised for Resolume and could actually run worse than other standardised codecs like photoJPEG as other apps like Modul8 don't have the optimisations builtin. HAP is now supported in the newest Beta of Modul8 and is very similar to DXV except its supported by a lot of apps (including Resolume).

Personally I like using ProRes when I can as its still in a format that can be quickly edited/messed with and keep its quality. In fact I generally have 3 copies of each clip - ProRes, PhotoJPEG and DXV so it doesn't really matter which app I may be using - it will just play properly.
