Difficulty importing media (mp4 from HD 720p camera)

    by liquidvision » Sun Jun 18, 2006 8:02 pm

I'm a new Modul8 user, and am very pleased so far. Setting up a VJ rig and have evaluated several options for software supporting the Intel-based macs. Modul8 seems to be the furthest along in beta testing and even the current 2.0.2 version works well on my MacBook Pro. I'm stumbling on one issue, though:

I'm unable to import media that IS quicktime supported, but don't understand why I can't use it in Modul8... Is this an unsupported codec? If so, can I expect support in the future or what do I need to do to use these files in Modul8?

The files are .MP4 / MPEG-4 Video captured at 1280x720 on a Sanyo VPC-HD1 camcorder (HD 720p resolution). The camera records quicktime compatible MP4 files directly to SD card, which I import to harddrive. These files play just fine using quicktime.

The following details can be found under "Get Info...More Info" for the files:

    Dimensions: 1280 x 720
Codecs: MPEG-4 Video, AAC, MPEG-4 ODSM, MPEG-4 SDSM
    Channel count: 2
Duration: (varies, but no different results whether a few seconds or a few minutes)

Hardware is a MacBook Pro 17 / 2GB RAM. I've attempted this both in Modul8 2.0.2 and 2.5 beta v3. I've tried both drag-and-drop into the media set as well as the "Import Media..." method. All attempts result in a "MEDIA NOT SUPPORTED" message in the project window.

I would very much like to use these files immediately in Modul8 without reformatting or re-encoding them. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I would be glad to send a file in for testing. (files are about 1MB in size per second duration)

Thanks in advance for any help on this matter,

    Blair

Send us a file on a ftp server or by post and we will check that.

Basically you can get them working by removing the sound channel (not sure exactly why at this time).

However the performances of the MPeg4 are not very good and we saw that this codec can cause some kernel panic on Intel (not specially in Modul8 but in any QT application).

So you better recode them anyway to a better and more stable format for real time video.
