Hi,
I am looking to purchase gear, and I was wondering if a disk array helps the speed, or does it create a bottleneck if using a single firewire connection - A firewire array w/ laptop.

Assuming you're talking RAID level 0, 5, 0+1, 1+0-
reading performance increases, writing performance will stay much the same.
Firewire should be well-fast enough with a standard 7200rpm drive (I think...).
