    Two Macbook Pros

    by nicksmix » Fri Mar 06, 2009 12:00 pm

Anyone using modul8 on two computers?

    How are you doing this??

I am looking for switchers with crossfade capabilities - they can be found for analog mixing, but so far not for miniDVI as far as I can tell...

Why would I want to do this?

Imagine each computer is like a deck with modul8 projects saved on each. You could load a project on both, fade to one, load a new project on the other, fade, load another - it would be completely seamless, and keep things fresh. You could pour so much work into the preparation of a badass set.

Am I over-thinking this? Is anyone doing anything remotely close to what I am saying? Is there another way aside from two computers??

    Ok, enough questions.

    Thank you!
    Nick

What you want to do is a basic vj thing… I work like this because we're two to work at the same time and we can be more responsive like this. BUT, as today, the only way to do this cheap is to work analog, with a v4 or v8 or any other video mixer... Otherwise you can have a try with the v440 from edirol, but if it's only to fade from one computer to the other, it's a bit huge and expensive

IF SOMEONE OUT THERE WOULD BE KIND TO RELEASE A DVI OR VGA (or mini displayport… thanks to apple for that…) MIXER WITH 4 INPUTS AND SOME OUTPUTS WITH A CROSSFADER AND CUT BUTTONS!!!

    I do that regulary:
3 portable Macs (2 Modul8 and one with GRID)
Edirol V440HD (capable of VGA mixing)
    and some cameras...

I remember some day i work a simple instalation without mixer: I use 2 beamers (2500 Lumens each) to project on the same screen... the I conect the Macs thru ethernet and use the network function on Modul8... Using the crossfade y mix the two projections or fade one Mac to black to keep only one signal on the screen ... with this I was able to load un one M8 and keep the other one running.....I called "analog light mixing" LOL :D

This the final installation on some rehearsal night:

I love the V440 excelent quality and build like a tank. In some cases I use de VGA Preview as a second independent Output (without effects).. It may work like a SD to HD scaler and at extreme use can do the job of a 8 in 4 out matrix. Also the posibility of controlling it with MIDI is amazing beacuse in some cases I work alone and use AbletonLive to trigger automated scenes of lights and camera angles during shows.

if you can live without crossfade then simple vga switch is dirt cheap solution comparing to all the gear mentioned above. and no analog needed.
BTW pro switches have fade in-out

Can you recommend any VGA switchers for the nice people here?

IIn the second pict I post in my last reply you can see one of those switchers:
    Image

Under the V440HD you can see the switcher Kramer VP-724XL:
    Image

With the "Presentation Switchers" you can switch VGA and Video inputs simless (with a selectable 4 seconds delay), no jump on signal and can fade to black betwing signals...
    This one is nice.

    Nice installation there.

I think we are all really looking for the holy grail: 400 EUR/USD, two channel VGA mixer with a crossfader.

I'm mostly stoked that you've got a soda machine in your setup!

As for an affordable VGA mixer with TH2G compatibility I couldn't agree more. We should do wish list signed by loads of VJs that we hand over to the video companies like sony, Roland/Edirol etc.

There is a solution avaliable already, the Edirol V440 have and aditional hardware expansion that lets you split one HD 1080p wide screen video signal in 2 video outputs similar results like the DualHead2Go but with lower resolution output.
    Image

This tool is call V-44SW, and it can be used also as a complete independent video mixer

Another (expensive) way is connect wih MIDI 2 V-44SW (Slave mode) to one master V-440 mixer (master controller) you can mix 2 independet TH2G systems. (Imagine the price of this system  )

    info:
    http://www.edirol.com/index.php/en/prod ... 386/v-44sw

I also remember that Kramer Electronics has a HD video switcher that do this kind of 2 output split video image.

Fry: imagine my setup without that soda machine? I will feel incomplete..LOL :D

No need to run in VGA
    besides, the cables are crap

I scan convert a dualhead2go down into left and right channels on the vixid. If I need a 3rd I can add on a V8

two PAL video channels gives you a 1536 pixel wide image
    thats good enough for me.

you can get 3 V8s for the price of a vixid, which is still a few thousand euros cheaper than a 2 channel VGA mixer.
