Compositing in 16:9 possible?

I'm working on a project that needs to be in 16:9 aspect ratio. I know I can just export at 16:9, but then everything is slightly distorted as it was composed in 4:3, the Modul8 standard.
Question #1
Is there a way to change to aspect the ratio of the canvas to 16:9, or other aspect rations? It seems severely limiting to only be able to compose in 4:3.
Question #2
If not, is there a work-around, module, or sneaky trick that will allow me to compose in 16:9 rather than just export a 4:3 composition into 16:9.
