[modul_scorpio]

Hello everyone.

I've been using Modul8 with prerecorded/edited material from my HD camcorder, but lately I've been wondering if I can use my camcorder for live feed somewhere in the middle of my edited material.

The thing is that I am using the newest Sony HD Handycam which comes with a USB cord but is not being detected by Modul8.

Any ideas?

Hello modul_scorpio,

most (if not all) these USB camcorders records in AVCHD locally, and they does not send any data on the USB bus live. You usually record locally on the camcorder (flash or HDD) and THEN transfer the file to the host (PC/Mac).

I could be wrong, but if someone saw one of these USB camcorder delivering live feed, we would be glad to know.

Unfortunately David's right...those AVCHD cameras don't allow live feeds via USB. I have one too any now need some cheap solution to getting a live feed for bands performances. Thought of a webcam but not too sure what the quality would look like.

your only solution if you want to use your AVCHD camera is to stream using the HDMI cable and use a capture card to get the feed into modul8. On a macpro, I think the best solution is the blackmagic intensity, but there are other cards, and some you can also use on your macbook pro.

I researched this with getting a HD signal in to the camera last week.

The AJA Io HD lets you grab video and transfer it to a Macbook Pro using Firewire 800. The AJA io Express lets you transfer to a Macbook Pro using an ExpressCard*. http://www.aja.com/products/io/io-hd.php

The HDX-SDI from Motu also seems to be able to cabpture HDMI. You can connect it to a laptop with an ExpressCard*. http://www.motu.com/video-products/hdx-sdi/body.html

The Mx02 from Matrox is probably the cheapest solution (?) for getting HD video in to your computer live. I think Vade did a test with this unit. The latency is pretty low.

* Only the 17" inch MBP models has the ExpressCard slot on the last two MBP models. Vade pointed out (in the above mentioned test) a backside of having a unit that plugs in to the Express Card slot. If you accidently bump the Express Card during a gig it pops out and you may have to restart your software or reboot the computer to regain the video signal.
