16:9 on the V-4 and preview in M8

by The Midi Thief » Mon May 31, 2010 12:58 am

    Hi!
I'm just figuring out how to do 16:9 projections when going through a V-4 mixer. I've made squished versions of my movies and I've changed the aspect ratio of my png graphics to match as well. Everything works except for M8 type that is being stretched (I can stretch it vertically, but with loss of resolution).

Is there a way to force Modul8 to preview in unsquished in 16:9 while outputting 4:3 to the V-4 mixer?

Ok,I've change tactics. I'm now having a 16:9 preview in modul8 and using the free aspect ratio in Advanced Output to squish my comp so that the displays can stretch it after passing the V-4 mixer. Is there an exact measurement for this? I'm just fiddling around with the horizontal stretch until it the circle on the test card looks round on my displays.
Am I golden, or do I have to worry about any weird projector behaviour?

Great technique! If the exact numbers exist that would be awesome info for the rest of us. I will try to find them on my end as well. If I do I will let the forum know.

The tests I did at home ended up at 796x480. Don't know when I'm going to be able to test this on a projector. At the next venue they only have a 4:3 screen so we might stick with that. If we have time I could test the 16:9 format but we have a really short sound / image check so I doubt I'll get around to it.

I promised to get back with an exact numbers from the Advanced Output for making 16:9 work through a V-4 mixer:

    Ratio: Free
    x: -426
    y: -240
    width: 850
    height: 480

This gave me the right proportions on the projector and I was able to record it in 4:3 (squished) on a DV camera connected to the V-4 and then I stretched it back to 19:9 in the edit.

I used this method in in the video below. It looks a bit unsharp because I had to stretch it quite a bit to match the 1920 x 1080 HD footage from a Canon 7D DSLR camera. In this case I must say our style was very forgiving since it didn't require to be super crisp.
