midi controller annoyance

when using "edit midi map",

for example, it says for a moment "1/36" ( the button I pressed ) but then immediately some other false message goes in, such as "1/0" or "1/99".

my trick to work around this is to quickly turn off "edit midi map" after each control setting, but it's hard to do fast enough.

it's probably the fault of the controllers themselves, but what can you do?
happens a LOT with Oxygen 8. ( it's old, the knobs in bad condition )
but also with the electribe

it'd be great if we could manually enter the control numbers somehow

Agree with that. I occassionally get previously set controllers randomly appearing as blank too. Guess this is almost a support problem but it also seems to be part of the mystery of midi?!! I have a Kenton Control Freak Live and whilst there is no problem with the rotary controllers, M8 just Hates the buttons.

Tip here though for using 'JunXion' data routing app. and a joystick or other controller with M8 -

The solution seems to be to disable everything except the control you want in 'JunXion' i.e disable each trigger that is sending a signal except the one you are about to set and then set that one controller in M8 midi mapping, opening and closing the midi mapping each time.
Things can hang after a few attempts but eventually it does work!

I used to have an Oxygen 8 with bad pots and it was hell trying to program MIDI numbers properly. I've been using a Novation Remote 25 for the past two years and never have those problems anymore. I vaguely remember reading something about being able to program the MIDI numbers by hand via editing an XML file (but I could be thinking of the Ableton board).

Cheers,
Justin

this is a big problem. I've been trying for HOURS to set up the control scheme :(

perhaps our USB-midi plug is faulty?
the dreaded "1/0" erases all the other settings before the set up can be completed

This might be a prob of the mod/pitchbend wheel. I think that controller number is for that device.

Maybe your oxygen's modwheel/pitchbend wheel is faulty?

That's possible, our Oxy 8 is due for replacement! It's been through many shows

It's also happening with electribes, but not so often now that the EV-10 (usb<-midi) was replaced with a UX-16

And it's impossible to control modules by midi? ( they end up re-triggering rapdily )

I've got things "under control" for tonight's performance, though! ;)

Electribes? You can't get any CC out of them unless you use a MIDIOx patch, afaik. They release some sort of strange mixed MIDI messages.

You CAN control modules by MIDI. Please define "control" more deply and what module you want to control.

Well, the thought was to have the notes of electribe patterns trigger buttons, etc. on modul 8.

It actually does work (in spite of the assignment problems above.)
Perhaps a module would make it connect better... (a good goal.)

specific example: the module "vibrate" wasn't controlable by electribe - it became stuck, though it's "lock button" wasn't clicked.

(MidiOX - isn't that on windows? Is there a good mac equivalent)

'Junxion' from Steim will do the trick -

Apologies for the off topic nature of this request, but does anyone know of an OS X program that performs a similar function to Steim's Big Eye.
I've been looking for something like this for a while.
Any pointers would be much appreciated

I think Big Eye is a bit of a wonderful one off; I keep hoping Steim will do an OSX version... is it still only OS8-9?

There might be something in Eyes Web at http://www.infomus.dist.unige.it/eywindex.html
but I haven't yet found the time to get my mind round its many possibilities.

Junxion works on OSX :)
