3D line edge mapping

I am experimenting with various 3D mapping installations...all good, BUT very much inspired by the possibilities of single line 3D edge mapping as demonstrated to great effect by iduun/Anomes (its all about the mapping video) & mowgli.tv (amongst others).
I am trying to have various thin white lines race around the edges of 3D objects and I am really struggling to get the right effect and with no info I can find available I am pulling my hair out. I have had some success with the painter and winding the trace right the way up to leave a trail but this is really not accurate enough. Can anyone (or the gifted guys themselves) please help out with a helpful finger pointing the right direction I should be looking at?
I know half the fun is discovering it for yourself but knowledge shared is knowledge gained.
Thanks

MMMMmmmmm good pointer. But how do I animate the effect of the lines moving smoothly around any 3D edges?

no need to go that far.
just knock out the white lines, save as PNG+ or PSD
then move some white shapes around underneath it in M8

All great advice & help. Anyone else have other ideas as there are obviously several ways to achieve this effect?

@deepvisual
what do you mean for "knock out" white lines?
draw them onto/or based on the mask?
gracias!

you can either have a black image with "holes" for the lines and then move shapes underneath

or

have your image with white lines on a black background and then move black shapes over it
