Looking for a way/module/filter to create "trail"

I am aware of the "Trace" global filter. It works allright, although from what I have gathered you need to have luma key on.
I am actually looking for a way to apply this sort of effect to a certain layer, best solution would be via Filter module.
I used to use "Alpha trail" effect in Resolume but I have been unable to find it. From some info I found online I am a bit confused. Are there freeframe effects that are just Win or Mac only? Also, are those effects stable with M8?
I guess my ultimate question is:
Is there a way to download just the alpha trail effect and put it in plug-in folder?
