Live source to clips for random playback

    by mbvcloud » Thu Nov 04, 2010 3:23 pm

    Hello,

I recently found out about Modul 8 and the forum and would like to inquire if it is possible to capture video from the live real time source into short video clips (or stills would also work) and then have them playback in random order on another layer?

I'm trying to create an interactive projection and I'm looking for a tool or software that can accomplish this task.

In more detail what i want to accomplish is:

    1. have one layer of a rear projection playing on a screen (a looping mov file).

2.have a live source video camera on the other side of the screen that will capture in its image the first layer as well as the image of the person walking in front of the screen.

    3. project this live source as a second layer so to the viewer they can see their image incorporated into the first image (like a mirror with no shadow because the projection is coming from the back).

**4** capture images from the live feed throughout the day to be played as a third layer. (so viewers will see images of others who interacted with the space earlier in the day and their image will also be captured to be played back at other times).

I'm pretty sure about how to pull off steps 1-3 but any assistance with how to do step #4 would be GREATLY appreciated.

    thanks so much in advance

to do this automatically is tricky, unless you create a macro,
but you can capture to disk, then use the movie random frame module

thanks so much for your reply to my post. I just want to clarify, would I be able to have the live feed constantly feeding to the disk and them use the movie random frame module to pull frames from that movie file (as it was growing?)

If so.....that would be exactly what I need!!!!

    thanks!

doubt it will work like that.
you can't record and playback the same file at the same time.
but you may be able to automate it to do something close.

otherwise you can use a stop motion app and setup an interval to capture stills in a folder. when you add this folder into modul8, it will play the images back. Then you can play it randomly. As soon as a new image is added to the folder, it will refresh in modul8.

I made an app with processing in order to do that but you need to press a key to capture an image. The source code is given, you can modify it to fit your needs
