Projection onto windows with black shade?

    by AgentD » Fri Mar 22, 2013 9:08 am

    Hi,

I might have just accepted a video mapping project which the central part of the projection surface is actually black shaded windows... For some reason I thought I could project something onto it which can be somehow visible. But someone told me that it is virtually impossible and I'm starting get worried that I might have screwed up... The surface is about 50m tall and 30m wide building and it seems extremely difficult to cover the part with anything such as fabric.

Does anyone have any experience with projection on the windows? Black shaded ones? If you have any suggestions or even just your experience I would really really appreciate it. Thanks a bunch in advance!!

In my personal experience projections on black materials will be very weak surfaces for projection. Projecting on glass is also very weak as most of the light just passes through it, unless it is brushed or finished glass. If possible you should buy some large pieces of vellum or tracing paper and place them over the glass.

it is possible to use a special 'black light' projector.
We used one once to project on the sun, but I dont have any photos of it as the gig was at night.

Thank you Ilan for your opinion. It's unlikely that they can put something on the windows but I might be able to suggest them to paste paper on some part of the windows from inside to block the light going through. Thank you!

At the end of the day almost any black surface that is not specially treated to except light is going to suck out the light. It's why the projection screen surrounds are usually black velvet or something similar.
Lining your windows with white stretched muslin is the way I would go if I had to do this on a large scale.
    Good luck.
