scenes are for quick squetching ideas, but for final projects they are not recommended, as they snapshot every parameter in your app, which, in your case, is not what you want
I can also officially recommend LaserCubes, as they have a built in DAC interface - so no need for a separate hardware.
They can be battery operated as well. And they are lightweight and work out of the box with MadMapper.

as you noted, the workaround is to create a texture buffer, aka dummy projector, aka 2d composition. (just like precomps in after effects).
There's a discussion in the team to make a buffer primitive, just like a dummy projector but without the projector specific parameters.
