New module: (i) Video Repeater (beta)

by The Midi Thief » Sun Sep 20, 2009 9:30 pm

    Hello!
I did a module that is like a visual representation of the beat repeater that is found on some DJ mixers, DJ sofware and other audio programs.

I imagine this would look good trigged by hand or MIDI synced to Ableton or a Pioneer DJM800 mixer (or likewise) or why not Traktor. I haven't had the possibility to try anything but the manual option yet.

There are still some kinks to work out. If you have the time, please take a look at the module and help me out. Two things that I couldn't solve tonight:

    1. When the effect turns off, it won't continue from the position in the movie where you started it. It will return to the beginning no matter what I try.

    2. In pingpong mode the movie could end up playing backwards when you let the repeat button go. I didn't find a good way to prevent it.

    Any feedback welcome!

    Thanks!

I just posted a final version of the module. I reworked the code using another approach, since I never got the the start point to work in the first edition.

    There are two modes:

    - "Direction" which is like clicking the direction button (ctrl_layer_movie_playDirection).

    - "Shuttle" which uses the shuttle function. This one works better if you have audio in your clip. The add/none/sub options decides how the repeat is applied.

    Enjoy!

    Great Job

Thank you very much, it's a kind of module I've tried to make myself but never finished.
Juste a detail could be improved to make it perfect. The level knob should gave a wider range to repaet rithme.

I've tried to modify your module but I haven't find this detail myself, maybe you could change it yourself easyer.

Anyway big thanks for this module :D

    Thanks Lo!

I am aware of that and I will look in to it further. The thing is that the repeat time is releated to the lenght of the video clip so while this range might be good for short to mid length video clips, it might be crap for long ones. I need to find a better way to solve this.

I had the same problem when I tried to make a similar module, and resolved it puting 2 buttons in the module, One for "shorts" movies and one for "long"
but the solution sould be that the "size" knob change the number of images instead of a fraction of the movie length. But I couldn't find a keyword for this application ...

    (sorry for my bad english)

I updated the (i) Video Repeater module to version 1.1. The repeat level now goes from 0,0-1,0 and there is a value box for typing in the value manually and nudge buttons for adding/subtracting with increments of 0,01.

Let me know if this works better.

This module is really fun using together with Sigma6's TimeLapse Processing app that grabs video stills for the new animation folder function (read more + download link here: http://www.garagecube.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4338).

I'm preparing for a gig tomorrow where I am using a live cam and this Sigma6's app + the Video Repeater module will be fun toys to play with.

I have modified the TimeLaps app to listen to midi so that you can trig it from Modul8 instead of switching windows. I promise to share it but I need to polish it a bit first. At the moment there is no UI for picking the midi device and setting what MIDI channel to listen for. I'm quite new to Processing as well, so I'm hoping for some answers in the Processing forum to get a bit further.
