Slideshow Module Enhancement / Suggestions, Possible Bounty

    by gmint » Tue May 05, 2009 2:45 am

I've recently started doing a show where we're basically taking crowd pix and having them wirelessly transmitted to our M8 machine with an Eye-Fi card (an awesome unit, BTW). Right now, I'm basically sorting through them in the finder, importing the good ones into the media bank, and then using the existing slide show module to project them. The results are great (thanks M8!) but the whole process could be a bit more streamlined (there's also the lesser problem of the finite number of images in the media bank competing for space with my other content). So, what I'm looking for is the following: the ability to simply run a slideshow from a folder without having to import the images into M8 first.

In other words, I'm basically looking for a reworked version of the existing slide show module that pulls from a folder instead of the media bank.

Let me first say that I've never gotten to the underpinnings of M8 and I've unfortunately never found the time to get into Python, so I don't even know if this is technically possible. However, if it is possible, it's something that would make my life easier, and something that I'm sure would be useful to others. To that end, if it's possible, I might be willing to put up a small bounty* for the person who does it. Don't think I'm talking thousands of dollars or anything, but if there's someone out there who has the time, please make yourself known and we can discuss further. On the other hand, if this isn't currently possible, I do think that this is something that would be very useful and I would submit this as a feature request for a forthcoming version.

*For those not familiar with the concept of a bounty, basically it's something that's done in the open source community when you want to incentivize development of a certain feature that you want or need. Usually, whatever code is developed is released back into the community for everyone and the person who undertook the development gets the cash from whomever sponsored the particular feature.

or wait for 2.6. You'll be able to drag a folder of images and have them running like a slideshow…

Have some inside info do you :D Actually, that's pretty much exactly what I'm waiting for! Oh, and there's no way I was going to pay 700 Euros anyway. I said a "small" bounty...

I saw this done using Aperture recently. You can view pix in a folder on external monitor - projector. So they got stream in, sorted good ones to a folder and got them on screen. I noticed the guy at the making choice had the hardest time.

That's an interesting approach... but, I feel like that would be kind of boring. The reason that I want to do this in Modul8 is that I can add some action to the photos. If all I wanted to do was a basic slideshow, I'm sure there would be something out there for that. However, with Modul8 I can add movement, effects, other video, etc. and it's much more engaging...

. the good news is, this is very possible. i wrote a module that would receive the band name of the music video my partner was playing (wirelessly via the OSC module) then i would load up to 32 images from a directory based on the band name.

. i've uploaded a stripped down version of that module, 120beta load images which could be useful for you. let me know what you think!

    James,

Thanks a lot! I've downloaded the module and I'll give it a look when I have a chance. From your description, it does look like that might make my job a whole lot easier. Also, I've wanted to learn Python but I've never gotten around to it. If I have a module to look at, it's sometimes easier to get started...

James, your module is an epic win. Despite being very basic, it accomplishes probably 50% of what I want to do--which is huge. Like I said, I could do this by hand before, but it was very cumbersome. Your module makes this so much quicker. I really, really appreciate you sharing your work!

You could do this easily using quartz composer.
