Performance issues on a big machine

    by 235media » Wed May 14, 2025 5:24 pm

We love Madmapper and enjoy using it in fixed installations.
Now we have a large softedge projection with 4 WUXGA projectors and softedge. With the OVerlap we then have a pixel ratio of the video with a resolution of 5656x1200 px. If we adjust and map everything well, we unfortunately have a lot of stuttering in the picture during slow movements.
    We have the following mashine:

    Processor i9
2x RTX A4000 with Synch Board
    64gb Ram
    Win11 Pro
    Latest Madmapper Version

We have already tried all kinds of codecs (HAP, ProRes, H265...)

We then tried Watchout as an alternative and the HAP runs very smoothly.
Do you have any tips on what we can do?

What does CPU / GPU usage says ?
Do you have multiple GPUs on the machine ? Or all the displays are connected to the same graphics card ? (external displays and screen for MadMapper user interface)
When you compress you HAP movie, did you specify the chunks count ? If you set chunk count to 12 for instance, it will decompress using 12 threads, so if you have 6 cores with hyperthreading (x2) it will use all CPU units to decompress. You have to set the chunk count, if it's set to 1 it's not good

The CPU / GPU usage is only like at 20% max.
We tried out different settings for the HAP. We have 10 cores and tried to render the hap with 8, 6, 4, 2 Chunks but there was not much of a difference.

1- Are graphics drivers up to date ?
2- Do you have multiple GPUs on the machine ? Or all the displays are connected to the same graphics card ? (external displays and screen for MadMapper user interface)
In preferences / engine, you can see on which GPU MadMapper is running. Is it your good graphics card ? (MadMapper will use the GPU attached to "Main Display" in Windows display settings. If you have an integrated GPU in your CPU and use it as display for MadMapper interface and it is the "Main Display" then MadMapper will not use your nVidia/AMD GPU but the integrated GPU, that would explain.
3- In MadMapper preferences / Engine, output is set to Direct3D ? (it should for smoothness, it's hard to get perfect VBL Sync with OpenGL with all drivers)
4- Do you just have one movie playing on 4 video quads one for each projector ?
5- Are all displays set to the same refresh rate in display settings ? (including the MadMapper interface)

    Engine

    Hi Matt,
    here are my answers:
1- Are graphics drivers up to date ?
    Yes
2- Do you have multiple GPUs on the machine ? Or all the displays are connected to the same graphics card ? (external displays and screen for MadMapper user interface)
In preferences / engine, you can see on which GPU MadMapper is running. Is it your good graphics card ? (MadMapper will use the GPU attached to "Main Display" in Windows display settings. If you have an integrated GPU in your CPU and use it as display for MadMapper interface and it is the "Main Display" then MadMapper will not use your nVidia/AMD GPU but the integrated GPU, that would explain.

we have 2 RTX A4000 with synch Board. One wall with 4 Projectors is playing one video and the projectors are pysichal attached to one RTXA4000. The other 2 Projectors for a second wall and second video are attached to the other A4000 and here also the Madmapper Interface is connected.
3- In MadMapper preferences / Engine, output is set to Direct3D ? (it should for smoothness, it's hard to get perfect VBL Sync with OpenGL with all drivers) - we tried both options aswell
4- Do you just have one movie playing on 4 video quads one for each projector ?
as mentioned before. One video for 4 Projectors and 4 quads and one video for 2 Projectors and 2 Quads

5- Are all displays set to the same refresh rate in display settings ? (including the MadMapper interface)
    yes
