    MadMapper 6 BETA 1x - document folder

    by mw/mf0 » Mon Sep 29, 2025 9:41 pm

    Hi,

didn't MadMapper (v5) use to make your externals (in my case: Lasermaterials) available when those are in \USER\Documents\MadMapper ?
Example: i would put the latest version of my self-coded LaserMaterial in the approriate subfolder there and then could add it (link it) to any project. If I update the code of the Lasermaterial, it would then also be updated in all projects using it.

Now in v6 this seems to be gone. I know you have Lasermaterials centrally in the install path of Madmapper (c:\programs..), but that's not a good place for my user projects.
I also know you can have your Lasermaterials with each project in the appropriate subfolder. But that is project specific.

Is there no more way to have the externals in a central place (document folders) available for all your projects? I would like to have that option. (Or is it a bug? Then it is in BETA 18, windows11 ..)

    thanks,
    marcel

The annoying thing with how it was done in MadMapper before version 6 is that if you created a project with material "MySuperLedWallAnim", you end your project, all good. You start a new project and modify this material, then some time later you reload your old project and it doesn't do the same as before. MadMapper 6 preserves your projects better, you can also easiely move your project from a computer to another by just moving the project folder.

Now, how to solve your case where you edit a resource that you want to share between multiple projects. For this case, the solution is to publish the resource online after editing it (you can publish privately if you don't want this work to be shared with community), and update it from the online library in other project.

of course there are pros and cons to both project-specific externals as well as global externals. i'm sure you have a lot of exposure to this topic when writing the code of madmapper ;)

personally i would prefer having the choice - both source paths working! there could even be a small annotation or indicator somewhere that makes one understand if a ressource is local or global.

about the online library: i see the benefits, but i have everything (all projects/ressoruces/libs of all softwares i use) mirrored in my private cloud anyway. hence working with another external cloud service is less appealing.
though it is cool that it exists, great to be able to share with other users!!
