I downloaded the madmapper demo: I have a 17" macbookpro running under 10.6.8, 2.66ghz intel corde 2 duo with 8gb of ram, Nvidia 6400 GM/GT, 256 mb of vram.

tried to load a 720x404 h264 .mov and added a simple quad but I get a horrible frame rate (5fps?) and even the basic menu funcions seem slowed down (click, wait, wait, then menu appears): I assume it's my fault somewhere: any hint?

First, try using PhotoJPEG codec at 75% instead of h.264. The latter codec is not efficient for live performance playback.
