Hi all,

I know this is probably as bit off subject, and perhaps more suitable in the Modul8 forum, but I thought i'd see what anyone thought.

I keep seeing the mapped effect of drawing a line around 4 sides of a box.....

I wonder if anyone has the method of doing this..... Is it created in AfterEffects? or directly in the VJ software?

Also, as a next step, how does one go about drawing a line around a non-regular shape??? For example, I have seen videos of mapping the panels of a training shoe. I assume that simply skewing a SQUARE-LINE video would actually create thinner and thicker areas of the line which is not what I want to achieve.

There are many way to do it. One I have done in the past that is fairly simple is masking the outside of the image then copying the mask, invert it and make it slightly smaller. You should now have an outline of the shape. Now any color movement behind these 2 layers will seem to be a line.

Thanks for that VjKg, but it is more the concept of a moving line that I am trying to achieve.

The "smaller mask" idea is useful nonetheless for edging, so many thanks !

Do you know how to animate these lines at all?

Hi scaryxpuppy,

these lines can be achieved with any compositing program. And non regular shapes are also done this way.

In AE ou would use a stroke effect to do so.

Not enough control. If one wanted to do 1 continuous line along the edge of a box this is not possible and most folks are looking for that effect.
For the moment the best way to do this is to use AE's stroke plug-in. The process for this being:

- Make your map in MadMapper
- Export the map from either the input or output
- Import the resulting SVG file into AE
- Create the stroke animations you want based on the lines in your map
