Mesh disappearing after calibration even when low calibration error

I keep encountering a really annoying and erratic behaviour when calibrating my meshes. Once I put in my 6th point the mesh just disappears, and I am left with 6 red dots. However, my margin for error is very good (less than 15px).

Is there something I am doing wrong? Annoyingly, *sometimes* - say once out of every 10 attempts - it works, but with no pattern I can discern.

this usually happens when there's a "relatively big" difference in measurements between the model and the real object.
It works "usually" perfectly when using a mesh and its 3d printed version (== exactly the same measurements)

I'm using a 3d print from the model when I do this: is there a way to calculate this discrepancy?

have you followed the tutorial on youtube ?

what kind of projector are you using ? It won't work on wide lens projectors,
as there's too much optics distortion.
