why so slow on my mac? (reposted from general)

I posted this also on madmapper general forum but since I got no answer at all I guess I've put the question to the wrong audience:
I downloaded the madmapper demo: I have a 17" macbookpro running under 10.6.8, 2.66ghz intel core 2 duo with 8gb of ram, Nvidia 6400 GM/GT, 256 mb of vram.
tried to load a 720x404 h264 .mov and added a simple quad but I get a horrible frame rate (5fps?) and even the basic menu funcions seem slowed down (click, wait, wait, then menu appears): I assume it's my fault somewhere: any hint?
thanks in advance!

MM shouldn't be slow on such a configuration.
Generally, try to avoid H264 codec and favor PhotoJPEg @quality 80.

thanks for answering: even if h264 runs smoothly in any other SW I huse, I tried to follow your suggestion and actually FPS rises a bit (but still far from being usable): what strikes me most is the delay in the user interface: click on add a quad, wait a second, quad appears: it' s the same on your macs?!? I guess the answer is no since so many people is enthusiast of this software....

the answer is no, as it is blazing fast on my computer, MBP i7 2.3Ghz, 8GB ram, ATI 6750, 10.6.8
Are you sure you don't have a 9600M/9400 gpu combo ? And maybe are you running off the 9400 ? Check in your energy preferences.

franz,
THANKS
THANKS
THANKS
and again, thanks for showing me how DUMB I could have been. yes, the energy saving preferences were set on low performance. of course I may say that I was sure it was set on high performance but this is not an excuse for being so dumb! now I also understand why the work I am doing with quartz, syphon and modulate was so slow too..

I know this post was solved but I prefer to write here rather than making a new post as this looks like the closest to my problem.
I'm having problems with MadMapper output. It drops a lot of frames. I'm sending my output from M8 through Syphon to MadMapper. I'm using PhotoJPEG footage which varies from very small (640x360) to relativley big (1280x720). In any case and for any size, the video is playbacked properly in M8, once on MadMapper in each panel (input, output and second display) the video is dropping loads of frames. The funny thing is that if I simply open any window from any program to cover MadMapper panels, the video is playing smoothly on my second diplay.
I'm pretty sure there's a simple explanation for this as I'm quite new to the software and I might have not chosen the right settings for my project or machine.
I'm using Modul8 2.6, MadMapper 1.1 on a MacBook Pro 2.5 GHz Core 2 Duo with OWC solid disk, 4 GB Ram 667 MHz DDR2, VRam 512.
My M8 settings are 2400x600 for Syphon output, preview ratio 4/1.
Any idea?
Thanks a lot to all the community and to the developer team for any possible suggestion to come!

did you try downloading the latest MM 1.2.1 ?.
On the other hand, if you're Syphoning @2400*600 but have "only" 512 Mo of VRAM, I wouldn't be surprised.

Hi Franz,
I see that your solution worked for someone else. I also have the same problem as the OP, but I am not sure how to check if I am running off the 9400. Can you maybe explain how I can do it? I would really appreciate it.

there's a free little app called gfxCardStatus that lets you selected and lock to the GPU you wanna be using.

I'm brand new to MadMapper, tried it out for the first time yesterday and just bought it today.
I notice I had very low fps when I imported my video into MadMapper.
The video is 1920x1080 (the output projector is the same) I tried exporting using: PhotoJPEG Medium and Best, Apple Intermediate Codec, and H.264, but always had drop frames. I was able to get the video to run smoothly at 1280x720 with h.264.
I'm using a:
MacPro 2009 OSX10.8.2
8-core 2.66GHz hyper-threaded (16 cores)
48GB of DDR3 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB
and MadMapper 1.3.1
UPDATE:
So this software must be GPU intensive. Looking at Frame Rates: while playing a 1080p h.264 video I was getting a frame rate of about 20-24fps in MadMapper with the GT120 card. I swapped out the GPU with one of our new beast machines with a Radeon 5870 1GB. The same file ran at 58-60fps. I guess it's time to upgrade the GPU since the 48GB of RAM and 16 cores is just not cutting it. haha, never thought I'd say that.

1920 x 1080 needs at least 1 GB VRAM to run smoothly.

I'm a Cinema 4D and After Effects artist by trade, so not a lot of "real-time" GPU intensive work, but I guess that's about to change a little.
