Hi guys,

I'm relatively new to VJing - I have been using Ableton Live for a while now and have found that there is more work available to VJ's than DJ's where I am (every second person is one!).

So, I also produce tracks and am studying Music at University. I invested in an Intel iMac a little while ago and started experimenting with VJ software. I'm extremely impressed with Modul8 compared to the rest of the available products. However, I wish just one thing - and it may be possible already - so please excuse my inexperience if it is:

Is it possible to assign a MIDI controller to individual layer vales (opacity?). I'm used to mixing in audio across different channels by sliding the faders on my UC33. Is it possible to do this with Modul8 without using the arrow keys?

I've been using Live/Reason in my band for about four years now. Our original VJ left in '04 and I took up his tasks as well when I discovered Modul8. It's actually really easy to set up MIDI clips in Live and have them run M8, so, for example, if you have a sound swell up in volume in Live, the opacity for a M8 layer rises in conjunction (there are also various ways of having your MIDI controller control both Live and M8 at the same time). I think there are a number of people/bands doing shows like that already (check VJforums.com).

thanks for the advice - this is what really drew me in to Modul8. I was looking for something with rewire built in but I have some friends who use Arkoas (professionally) and I didn't really like its interface. I like programs to have depth which it seemed to lack. So I had a thought when testing with the demo and Live - why not hook a MIDI cable up to reroute the out from Live back into Modul8 - and it worked a treat. I'm very surprised how well it runs, with native Live (BETA) and Modul8 under Rosetta. I can't wait for 2.5 now!

Like I say, I moved to Mac a little while ago and I've had this incredible voyage of discovering why the pros use macs. When I stumbled across the developers apps (in particular the Quartz Composer) my head just exploded! I would like to see Microsoft deliver that in an operating system.

Last night when I uncovered the Composite MIDI Mapping that was it - hook line and sinker, although admittedly I'd already put my card details in! I feel that after I've had a little time to push the limits a little and create some matrial (if you know of any little gems, i would love to know) I will venture into A/V land. I hate being bored when I'm performing and I think that trying to control audio and visuals at the same time from the same machine will be enough to satisfy my urge for now!

If anyone has any demos of what they have done in the AV field I would love to check it out.
