    Modul8 + Numerology = Happy (+ link 2 files)

    by refresh » Sat Oct 22, 2005 6:13 pm

So I've been using the Numerology demo a lot with M8 and having loads of fun with it (http://five12.com/numerology.html).

I wanted to share some of the fun for those who had not tried it out yet, and/or those who are not using LFOs to generate CC messages for M8..

Download the sample files i made here:
    http://stateofnothing.com/M8/M8_Num_Kit.zip

The archive contains a sample M8 project and a sample Numerology file that has 6 LFOs going to 6 layers of opacity in M8. Just set the bpm in Numerology to a track your listening to, add some media and hit the reset button in Num on the downbeat ... mmm eye candy..

Also it is great fun assigning LFOs to the "scratch" knob, I find it is better to set the speed of that layer to 0 though and it will play smoothly..

One fun thing is you can run this all on the same computer, just start numerology up first.. also the LFOs don't time out in the demo, but I suggest buyin the proggy cause LFOs are just the tip of the iceberg..

    Greetings,

My band has been doing the same thing, only using Live to control M8 (programming LFOs and the like). As of now, only one of our laptops running Live is acting as a controller, but by tour-time next spring we'll have all three laptops hooked up to control M8 simultaneously. Can't wait for the M8 multiple screen output...

    Cheers,
    Justin

Ableton Live is the bomb, one of the most satisfying licenses I've ever purchased... I can get lost in that app for days... However I did find that running it and M8 at the same time on the same system can be a bit too taxing.. But when i get a g5 that might be a different story..

Anyway, in case anyone is curious, I got Live controlling M8 on the same machine without using midi pipe by just running the midi out of my microKontrol into the midi in (with a physical cable)... Oh and i think i fumbled around in my routing in live a bit..
Anyone using "midi pipe" successfully for this sort of thing? I'd like to know how..
Numerology seems to be a lot less overhead on the cpu than live..

BTW I didn't know you could send out a midi CC message from an LFO in Live, can you explain that process a little?? I'd love to try it out..

I'm still thinking ideally it'd be better to have a module in M8 that has a more M8 tailored LFO control panel.. but because of network problems i haven't actually seen the online module library yet so i don't even know if it already exists..

download the files and give it a whirl, i think it's pretty obvious where it is going. wherever the hell you want it to go. just cause i said it was fun doesn't mean you can't use it to do ultra serious non fun real art with.

the idea of having 10 layers of video modulating opacity, color and video source in response to a timed bank of user controlled LFOs running all on the same machine, is pretty exciting, at least to me and perhaps one or two other people out there. not to mention you don't have to spend any extra money to do it.

the reason i bothered to take the time to put these files together and make the post was for the one or two other people out there who may possibly be inspired and/or have real feedback about this approach... I still have faith that they are out there.. lurking.. amongst the anonymous naysayers..

    refresh that's brilliant; wonderful.
    I am inspired.
I am still playing the two files together and 'exposing' between the 2 programmes making sure that what I see is happening!!

    I am in a 4 piece audio/visual group EMC http://www.emc.me.uk/
2 electronic musicians/2 visual artists although we overlap discipines lots.
Also I am a registered Numerology user, iBook, work a treat together.
Will get back to you once I figure something out, thank you.
Any more ideas welcome; you are ahead of me on functionality between the two progs
    regards

Sounds great! But as i try i dont get your sample project to work.
When i start up numerology there isnt any lfo´s running (should it be?) and how is the signal assigned to the chanals in M8. Are the signals mentioned to trigger the transparency in M8 ?If you could explain the way it works a little bit more i would be wery greatful. Seems to be a nice way to trigger video.

Very interested in this, but haven't had any success getting the files you provided running....do I need to have something linking the programs together?

    Cheers

Modul8 should be able to read MIDI messages from Numerology without any additional software using default settings.

Try quitting Modul8 and Numerology and then opening the Numerology file that I provided first. once that's open and you see all the LFOs in that file running, then open the Modul8 file I provided.
By default Modul8 should be able to receive the messages coming out of Numerology, if this is not the case perhaps there is some other app you are running that is interfering?

When the file is open you should see in Modul8 the opacity sliders modulating to different intervals and using different waves all coming from the LFO to MIDI CC messages coming out of Numerology. Now assign some media to those layers and you should see the layers modulating opacity to the master tempo in Numerology.

Now to go a step further add more LFOs and CC message output modules and then assign them to other parameters in Modul8. To do this, It is often necessary to mute all the CC output modules in Numerology and then in Modul8 go in MIDI learn mode and click on the one parameter you want to control, then switch back to Numerology and unmute the channel you want to control it with and then go back into Modul8 and exit Midi learn mode.. a little tedious but you get used to it fast.. let me know if it is still not working for you..

cool, got it working....not sure what was up but tis good now!

yep, is kinda annoying having to mute channels but once its all set up its great to play with!

now to get my head around Ableton more and get some of the tracks we've written controlling M8!

    Good tip Mr Refresh!

I am very interested to try this combination out.
But the Numerology patch does not work on my Modul8 version 2.
I do not understand MIDI really and Numerology the less, but the idea has been bugging me for some time. So I would learn what needded if this is the way I want to go, but I am not able to make(alter) this patch to work.
    Please help!
