Playback video with 4 audio channels on a Mac

    by visio_001 » Sat Sep 27, 2025 11:23 am

    Hello Madmapper Pros,

I am trying to play a single video which contains 4 audio channels.
The video is a quicktime prores with 4 audio channels.
Plays fine with all channels on a blackmagic hardware player.
In Madmapper I only get the stereo audio signal.
Tested the sound card with other software, which worked well.

    My system is:
Madmapper 5.7.2, Macbook Pro M1, Focusride sound card

I did the following in MadMapper:
    - selescted the audio output device at the audio preferences
    - enabled audio
    - enabled Hardware acceleration
    - played the video

I also tried this terminal command.

    macOS, in Terminal.app:
    defaults write com.garagecube.MadMapper audioOutputMultiChannel 1

    Is it still necessary?

Perhaps it is not possible to play a multichannel prores file.
If this is the case, which container and codec works?
If it is not passible to playbac multichannel audio on a Mac, is it possible on a PC?

    Hope someone could help me.

    All the best,
    Visio

    defaults write com.garagecube.MadMapper audioOutputMultiChannel 1
This was for very old versions of MadMapper. Since a long time MadMapper plays all audio channels by default.

When you click on the info button in your movie parameters in MadMapper (the 'i' icon), it should tell you how many audio channels it has found.
You can also check in preferences / Audio, in the status area you should see "Opened with 4 channels"

If you enable hardware acceleration on a ProRes movie on macOS it will play the audio ignoring MadMapper audio settings (AVFoundation directly plays the audio, like QuickTime Player would). You'd better disable hardware acceleration.
Btw, does audio plays correctly from QuickTime player ?
