    Madmapper to a separate laptop

    by soave.ryan » Wed Jul 10, 2013 10:09 pm

I was wondering if it was possible to run Modul8 on one MacBook and then output to Madmapper which is being run on another MacBook. If possible what hardware would be needed for connection?

I have been using deckling cards with vdmx and mad mapper for a long time now. It works great. Also with external thunderbolt enclosures.
In 720p there is 1 frame latency and 1080p 2 frames latency. Vdmx to mad mapper via syphon doesn't seem to add any delay in my tests.
It works great for when making collaborative mappings -
Last year we made the stage design and mapping of the main stage for the MiRA festival in barcelona that way.
Using vdmx as switch between live feeds, scaler, titler and mad mapper for the mapping.
We build a workflow for all 10 performing artists to use for the shows so when connecting to the control the mapping fitted perfectly.

The only limit is that you have to output in 16:9 (well you can do it in SD 4:3 but that means giving up precious resolution)
But it is just a matter of masking in vdmx or mad mapper if you need a less wide format.

You can also use the live feed input directly in mad mapper. However it is not optimal for switching between multiple feeds. You get hard shifts (and a weird graphic glitch) when changing between multiple source. But for one feed only it is perfect.
